BATON ROUGE, LA - A coalition of center-right organizations and activists joined forces today to form the Louisiana Judicial Coalition. The coalition was recently organized to provide a strong debate on the upcoming hearings of Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
The Coalition continues to grow. The initial membership consists of the following entities:
Kevin Kane- President, The Pelican Institute for Public Policy
John Diez- Executive Director, Louisiana Conservative Action Network (LACAN)
Gene Mills- President, Louisiana Family Forum Action
Stephen M. Gel - Former President, Louisiana Lawyers for Life
Ruth Ulrich- Conservative Activist, Republican National Committeewoman for Louisiana
Ben Clapper- Executive Director, Louisiana Right to Life Federation
Gisela Chevalier- Conservative Hispanic Activist
"Judge Sotomayor recently commented that the role of the judiciary is to 'make policy'. This is very troubling, and while she will have the opportunity to make her case in the coming weeks, we believe Louisianans don't want a Justice who will legislate from the bench," said John Diez, Executive Director of LACAN.
"The nomination of Judge Sotomayor provides the Louisiana Judicial Coalition with an opportunity to facilitate a discussion about judicial activism and judicial restraint," said Kevin Kane, President of the Pelican Institute. "And this process should continue after the Sotomayor hearings end, as people in Louisiana need to understand that there is more to a judge than their personal story. We cannot choose the right justice without considering their philosophy, temperament, and understanding of the Supreme Court's role in government."
